Doctors at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin removed 55 batteries from a woman's intestines and stomach after she swallowed them in an attempt to self-harm

A case report was published in the Irish Medical Journal. A 66-year-old woman was hospitalized after swallowing an "unknown amount" of cylindrical batteries in an attempt to injure herself.

X-rays have so far shown that the batteries she swallowed did not block her gastrointestinal tract and none of them seriously affected the organs.

After a week, however, she began to feel severe pain in her abdomen, for which she underwent an operation. Surgeons found that the stomach, under the weight of the batteries, had stretched to the area above the pubic bone. The team retrieved 46 AA and AAA batteries from the stomach.

Four more batteries lodged in the large intestine were "directed" into the rectum and removed through the anus. Batteries in the gastrointestinal tract can cause life-threatening injuries, including obstruction or chemical damage.

According to the doctors, this case is a record, no one has ever swallowed so many batteries at once. After the operation, the woman made a full recovery.
