Sunbathing season is underway, so it's the perfect time to have fun. But how best to protect ourselves from the sun?

You probably ask yourself this question more often now than at any other time of the year.

How much cream is enough, should it be reapplied after bathing… These are all questions we often seek answers to.

"If you've been in the water for a while or sweat, reapply every few hours, or best to stay under an umbrella when you can, out of direct sunlight," says Dr Lawrence Green, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at George Washington University School of Medicine.

Also, Green recommends using sunscreens or lotions rather than sprays for practical reasons.

“When you use a spray, a lot of it goes into the air, not onto the skin, so you have less protection than you think. They can also leave you with uneven protection if you don't rub them in completely, explains the doctor.

It is estimated that the amount of cream we should apply is equal to one to two ping-pong balls on the sun-exposed areas.

"Don't forget sensitive areas like the face, ears, back of the neck and tops of the feet, or hard-to-reach places like the back," says the dermatologist.
