The roots of Dr. Nikolay Neikov are in the Teteven Balkan. His mother, Donka Miryanova, graduated in psychology from Sofia University and for many years was the director of a school in Teteven. His father worked in an administrative position in a furniture factory. As a child, he loved reading adventure novels. He was impressed by sea battles and jungle adventures, as well as the mysteries of Ancient Egypt and Hellas. The Aztecs and Mayans made him think of becoming an archaeologist. He never thought of becoming a doctor. But now the white apron suits him very well.

He entered the Medical University without a problem. He started with gynecology and obstetrics, then became interested in psychiatry. In the end he chose internal medicine. "From the beginning of my career in 1992 until today, I have worked in internal medicine departments, cardiology intensive care units and offices. I returned to my native Teteven and started as a shop doctor. My work gave me great pleasure", explains Dr. Neikov.

The first days were tense, he had to make decisions about diagnosis and therapy on his own. The duty at the "Ambulance" turned out to be particularly tense, where he was alone in the ambulance and everyone relied on him. He encountered children with feverish seizures, patients with heart attacks, pulmonary edema and what not.

After the sanatorium in Bankya, cardiology continued to be close to his heart. In 2004, he changed his workplace again - he became a consultant in internal medicine, cardiology and abdominal ultrasound at the hospital "St. Naum" at the 4th kilometer. There he acquired a speci alty in internal medicine. But since he was a man of challenges, he decided to embark on another adventure - the TV show "Survivor". Seeking thrills like a true follower of Indiana Jones.

And he has hobbies with which he relieves himself from the tension. Hunting and fishing are among his priorities. He also likes walks in the snowy mountains early in the morning, when at minus 15-20 degrees no one thinks of going outside. However, Dr. Neikov is not afraid of the cold. He drinks a cup of hot coffee, puts on his rifle and sets off through the hunting grounds of the Balkans.

“A patient arrived on my duty with a cockroach in her ear. She told me how her head hurt so much and how she was going to go crazy at any moment. Her explanations seemed absurd to me, and at first I didn't believe her at all that she had such a parasite in her ear", says Dr. Neikov, who has been on the "Survivor" team several times with his colleague Dr. Kostadin Angelov from Alexander Hospital.

After the examination, it was found that the woman actually has a cockroach in her ear. The drama took place on home soil, not on the exotic island where the third season of "Survivor" was filmed. The young and inexperienced doctor at the time tried to remove the worm with fine instruments, as it was stuck very deep, but he did not succeed. Decided to try a flush.

To his surprise the cockroach fell into the basin still alive

Thanks to this and a number of more complicated cases from his practice, Dr. Neikov is fully prepared to get involved in extreme reality.

"Even with the launch of "Survivor" in our country, I received an offer to join. However, I couldn't find someone to replace me, and that's why I didn't go to the first reality show. However, he was also invited for the second season. He managed to organize his substitutions at the hospital. Left for the Dominican Republic with great enthusiasm and excited for the adventures ahead. When you packed your bags, his mother got worried. "I agreed to go to Panama, as for me it is an exceptional challenge," explains Dr. Neikov. No one who knew him well doubted his desire to criss-cross unknown lands in search of extinct civilizations.

“Working in the show is associated with a lot of risk - both for the doctors, the team and the participants. In extreme conditions, you rely only on experience, routine, the headset, your eyes and hands", the specialist reveals some of the intricacies of his work. According to him, survival in "Survivor" is much more difficult than the viewers imagine.

Medics do not have equipment such as X-ray, ultrasound or scanner

which can be vital. "You don't have laboratory indicators, and sometimes you have to act empirically, according to your gut feeling and deal with a technique that only fits in one backpack," explains the doctor.

Incidents with the participants of the show are numerous, curious, interesting as well as unexpected. One of them douses his feet in hot oil, trying to prepare food for his tribesmen. However, there were no complications after the quick intervention of Dr. Angelov and Dr. Neikov. In one of the games, another parted with another tooth.

“For me, the emotions were related to my stay and getting to know completely new and unknown places. I was interested in the lifestyle and culture of these peoples. In parallel, I accumulated

valuable experience to react in extreme situations

And I only carried one bag with me, full of medicines and consumables , smiles the doctor.

He also happened to help local residents as well as the Argentinian team that was filming at the same location. “There was no hospital, no pharmacy or local doctor on this Panamanian island. The population had to travel to Panama City to seek medical care, and therefore sometimes resorted to our services. We often accommodated the people there in our improvised field hospital, concludes Dr. Neikov.

Emergency

“An epidemic of conjunctivitis broke out among the team. Most recovered, but one of the girls returned to Bulgaria without being cured. It was probably an adenovirus infection.

One of the operators contracted the unknown tropical disease caused by a larva. It is transmitted by mosquitoes and is a challenge for us because it is not known in Bulgaria. We coped with the help of the Internet and with consultations with colleagues. Fortunately, we had the necessary medication and managed to fix it.

I circled 2 kilometers of bandages. The poisoned vomited 18 times each, lay on systems and returned to the game.

My biggest fear was malaria, even though I knew the disease was eradicated there. My other fear was related to severe injuries - fractures, contusions that can occur while playing and in these conditions. There were, of course, such incidents, but they were not fatal, adds the Robinson in a white apron.
