What is psoriasis as a disease? What are the reasons for its appearance? Can it be avoided?

Dozens of men and women suffer from psoriasis, which appears as thick, scaly rashes on the surface of the skin. Fortunately, it does not penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. It often damages only the skin of the hairy part of the head. Sometimes these can be small plaques scattered throughout the body. But in some cases the disease can cover a larger part of the body, almost to a state of psoriatic erythroderma. On children's skin, psoriasis usually appears in a teardrop-like form.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to protect a person from this scourge. And the question of the causes of the disease has not yet been discovered. One thing is known without a doubt: the appearance of psoriasis is influenced by many factors, the main one of which is genetic predisposition. If there were people in your family suffering from psoriasis, you should expect that this disease will affect your skin at some point in your life.

THE TREATMENT OF SKIN PLAQUES IS COMPLEX

Before proceeding with treatment, the form, stage of the disease and the general condition of the patient are examined. The treatment is complex, but must be carried out under medical supervision. The patient can try to help himself with external means. Some of the non-hormonal ointments reduce the division of the disease-causing cells of the epithelium and gradually the plaque disappears. By the way, every hormonal preparation works on this principle.

The only difference is in the duration of the drugs. Non-hormonal preparations have to be used longer - not less than a month. However, there is no adaptation to the preparation, habituation, dependence on it and other unwanted side effects.

Although it is very rare that psoriasis goes away by itself. More often, both doctors and patients make a lot of moral and material efforts to achieve not so much a cure as a state of clinical remission. This is the period between what seems to be a cure and the appearance of a new relapse of the disease. It can last a week or 10 years. No doctor can guarantee you that.

THE DISEASE CAN BE PAINLESS TOO

Psoriasis rarely itches, unlike, for example, seborrheic dermatitis (disruption of the functions of sebaceous glands on the scalp), which outwardly resembles psoriasis. It can be absolutely painless, except for the form of pustular psoriasis, when fissures and suppuration appear on the skin.

There is also a progressive stage of psoriasis, when any scratch, any cut can cause the appearance of a plaque in this place. In such a case, even muscle injections are not given.

In addition to the hairy parts of the head, psoriasis rashes appear on skin folds, elbow and knee folds, small finger joints. Arthropathic psoriasis should be feared when you have joint pain. Sometimes psoriasis only affects the palms and soles. There are isolated cases of psoriasis on the genitals as well.

PHOTOSENSITIZERS INCREASE SENSITIVITY TO ULTRAVIOLET RAYS

Before undertaking phytochemotherapy, the patient is thoroughly examined: whether he does not have any pathological changes in the blood, how the heart, liver and other organs function are checked. This therapy involves taking photosensitizers - substances that increase the sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet rays. The patient is placed in a special chamber, similar to a solarium, and in it he gets a tan for a certain time. By the way, such therapy combines very well with extracorporeal plasmaphoresis. In such a case, remission can be achieved for almost a year, and sometimes for more.

As for whether the psoriasis sufferer should simply stay in the sun more, the answer is: of course, if he is affected by that particular form of psoriasis that the tan helps with. Then he should regularly go to a resort, sunbathe, or at least use a solarium for this purpose. Physiotherapy and balneotherapy are also recommended: mud, mineral waters and others.

However, these procedures are performed when the patient is hospitalized - that is, when there are no new formations on the skin.

Can psoriasis be completely cured?

There is always hope, but for now there can be no question of anything other than achieving clinical remission. The task is to make it last as long as possible.

THERE IS A WINTER AND SUMMER FORM OF THE DISEASE

There are summer and winter forms of psoriasis. In winter, the disease usually becomes more active. In the summer, it flows more easily, not so pronounced.

It has happened that when a person is on vacation and baking, he notices that all the rashes have disappeared.
