I have been diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes type 1. I recently found out that the He alth Insurance Fund provides sensors for constant and long-term blood sugar measurement. Is it true that in order to receive a sensor from the He alth Insurance Fund, I must not have received test strips in the last 12 months? And my other question is: if I am approved as a sensor, how many test strips per year do I need?

Sensors for continuous monitoring of the glucose level are prescribed according to the "Protocol for the prescription of drugs paid by the NHIF/RHOF" according to the Fund's Requirements for prescribing medical devices for use with insulin pumps and sensors for continuous monitoring of the level of glucose glucose in type 1 diabetes mellitus in outpatient care - published in the State Gazette, no.36/13.05.2022 (and published on the official website of the NHIF: www.nhif.bg - heading "Drugs, medical devices, foods and aids" - link: "Requirements for diseases", sublink: "Diseases by speci alties " - item 29).

In the Instructions on the procedure for prescribing and dispensing medical devices from the list of medical devices by groups, which the NHIF pays in the conditions of outpatient medical care, and the amount up to which is covered for each group No. RD-16-22 /03.06.2022 (also published on the official website of the NHIF, it is stated that when issuing a Protocol for sensors for long-term monitoring of the glucose level, the specialized committees in the medical facilities for hospital care, defined in the Requirements, should be informed by the patient for the date of the last dispensing of self-monitoring blood glucose test strips. Protocol prescribing of sensors is not allowed for the period for which self-monitoring blood glucose test strips are prescribed.

After the issuance and approval of the Protocol for sensors for continuous measurement of the glucose level, the general practitioner is not allowed to prescribe test strips for self-monitoring of blood sugar. Duplication of electronic prescription for sensor test strips is not allowed.
