One of the rarest forms of cancer is that of the tongue. A malignant tumor originates from the epithelial cells of the mucous membrane

Almost no one talks about this disease and therefore it is very easy to confuse it with other harmless problems.

In Great Britain, about eight thousand new patients with this diagnosis are registered every year. The disease most often affects people over the age of 55, with only 12 percent of cases being diagnosed in young people.

The insidiousness of tongue cancer lies in the fact that almost no one talks about it. Therefore, dangerous symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases.

Cancer of the tongue can be indicated by a sore throat that does not go away for a long time, a red or white spot on the tongue that appears suddenly, frequent numbness in the mouth, pain when swallowing, pain or burning under the tongue, problems with diction, swelling of the neck, as well as constant bad breath.

The causes of the disease are bad habits - for example, alcohol and cigarettes. Damage to the epithelium can be caused by mechanical injuries, for example, a poorly fitted prosthesis that constantly injures the mucosa and tongue.

Women are most often affected by the disease. It is less common in men. Perhaps gender has some effect, but this has not yet been scientifically proven.
