In Italy, the confiscation of herbal tea from Peru, which has been legally sold commercially for years, has begun. The reason is the shocking and completely accidental discovery that the tea contains cocaine, writes BTA.

Roberto, a 38-year-old public transport bus driver in Genoa, tested positive for the routine test for the use of illegal stimulants, which is mandatory for the municipal company AMT. He has 10 years of experience in the company and enjoys an impeccable reputation. He immediately remembered that the day before the test he drank a cup of Peruvian herbal tea, which he often bought from an "ethnic" store in the city center. He shared with the doctor that he used to prepare a dose of two tea bags, which helps him to be alert for hours behind the wheel. The doctor of the transport company did not want the driver to be unfairly punished and asked him to bring him the same dose of tea to try it himself. After consuming the tea, he tested himself and also gave a positive result, which he immediately reported to the special formation of the Carabinieri troops for combating counterfeit and he alth-hazardous food and beverages (NAS).

A military policeman in civilian clothes bought the herbal tea brand from the same store to be tested in the NAS laboratory. The results showed that the tea contained small amounts of coca leaves which, when dissolved, released "sensitive" amounts of cocaine hydrochloride, the drug's active ingredient.

The carabinieri determined the product as "potentially dangerous" because its effect was strong enough to affect the senses and reactions of a motor vehicle driver.

An investigation has begun with a basic review of the store owner's records. She turned out to be completely regular and proved that he had been buying this tea for a long time from a Peruvian wholesaler who has a company in Milan.

Military special police officers were stunned by the fact that for years the tea had passed through customs checks for legal import without hindrance.

The product has been ordered to be seized from the commercial network, and the investigation is focused on its sole Peruvian importer in Italy.
