We asked the expert nutritionists to what extent the frequent use of products containing palm oil can harm our he alth.

Regardless of the fact that palm oil is derived from plants, it is closer in composition to animal fats, as it mainly contains saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. The main component of palm oil is palmitic acid. It is she who is associated with the most dangerous and common non-communicable diseases - especially cardiovascular diseases.

And one more thing - it contributes to the accumulation of fat reserves at an accelerated rate in the "fat depots" of the body. Palm oil is now added to products that already contain large amounts of palmitic acid: cheese, ice cream, cream, sour cream, butter. And also in chocolates, sweets, chips, french fries. They lead to the accumulation of excess body fat anyway. And imagine what happens if these products are additionally enriched with more palm oil and palmitic acid!

Furthermore, palmitic acid turns these products into a ticking time bomb. It causes not only the deposition of fat in various tissues and organs, but also affects the increase in the incidence of type II diabetes and other diseases.

Fatty acids literally "hit" the brain and the body becomes insensitive to insulin and leptin - the hormone that signals us that we are full. This means that the brain simply does not issue a command to stop eating. We found that it was palmitic acid that reduced the ability of insulin and leptin to activate. Oleic acid has no such effect on the body.

Alas, no one can guarantee that manufacturers of cheap dairy products put high-quality palm oil in them. And they choose it precisely because of its low price and long shelf life. The oil can be stored for a long time due to the fact that it has a very dense structure and a high melting point. The melting point of palmitic acid is 49 degrees. This means that in any case it cannot "melt" in the human stomach. This is why palm oil cannot be handled by any lipase in the human body. And it will be stored in your body unmelted as it is in the store… But not just as dead weight. The triglycerides in the oil will get stuck in the liver cells as "dead" cargo. And they can cause the development of fatty liver disease, steatosis. Even steatohepatitis and liver cirrhosis…

Raises “bad” cholesterol levels

High levels of palmitic fatty acids in the diet is the main reason for the increase in low-density lipoproteins.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol - this is precisely this "bad" cholesterol. Lipoproteins are mainly composed of palmitic acid. And when you constantly feed them through the food you eat, they become biological "waste" in the circulatory system. And the immune cells perceive them as foreign bodies. Because of this, atherosclerotic plaques tend to rupture and form thrombi in the blood vessels.
