15 people in wheelchairs from Sofia and the country made a symbolic siege of the residence to protest against the inaccessible urban environment. The protest is organized just one day after the national holiday of independence - September 22 - at the initiative of the Center for Independent Living - Sofia

People with various mobility disabilities stood in front of the underpass between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers, which turned out to be an impossible barrier for their movement.

The position of the protesters was presented specially for the BLITZ Agency by Mitko Nikolov from Vidin, who has broken cervical vertebrae and has been in a wheelchair for 20 years. The young man works on a computer in a human rights NGO:

“We appeal to the state, to the municipalities, to all people to organize the environment so that every object is accessible to people with disabilities. And they are 10% of the population of Bulgaria and are practically locked in their homes.

We want to show that disabled people also need independence - to manage on our own and to organize our lives ourselves, and not to submit to the inaccessibility of the environment, the inaccessible city and intercity transport.

And in my city of Vidin, the environment is also inaccessible, as in Sofia. I usually walk on the street because the curbs on the sidewalks are not beveled. It is impossible for me to use city and intercity transport. I have bought a car and customized it so that I can travel.”
