Ancient healers believed that the cause of gastric and duodenal ulcer was nervousness and irritability, so they treated it with diet and herbs. The recognition of ulcer as a "disease" in medicine is largely due to Friedrich Uden, who in 1816 published the first fundamental work on ulcer in the history of medicine.

In 1825, the French physician Jean Cruvelier, based on Oudin's monograph, proposed that ulcer be considered a separate disease and made a classic description of it, which is still recognized today. Thus, from an indigestion, a stomach ulcer becomes a disease. Many scientific theories have been proposed to explain the mechanism of its development, but for 180 years the main one has remained the following: in the aggressive acidic environment in the stomach, the activity of microbes is impossible, and the ulcer is the result of the imbalance of aggressive and protective factors. But regardless of the variety of theories, in practice the ulcer remained difficult to treat.

And so, in the 1980s, a discovery occurred that completely changed the views of the medical community regarding the nature of peptic ulcer disease. Not immediately, of course. It was not until 2005 that the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded for this discovery. In 1983, the two Australian physiologists Barry Marshall and Robin Warren hypothesized that ulcer-causing microorganisms (they named Helicobacter pylori) might be behind the destructive action of gastric acid. At first, the medical community laughed at this assumption, so Barry Marshall had no choice but to conduct an experiment on himself. We know the result - he drank a culture of helicobacter and "brought" an ulcer. This fact shocked even the fiercest skeptics. But the biggest impression made

And even regardless of the genetic predisposition to peptic ulcer disease, a person can eat whatever he wants, can overeat, get nervous and anxious, can't sleep…

But doctors are already sure that a person can get infected with the causative agent of an ulcer through poorly washed dishes, through kissing, and then… universal treatment of everyone from helicobacter.

Carriers of this bacteria are mostly smokers, alcohol drinkers and the elderly. And one of the paradoxes of the helicobacter theory of peptic ulcer disease is the fact that in Asia and Africa almost 100% of the population is infected, but only 1% of people suffer from peptic ulcer disease! In Europe, peptic ulcer occurs in 10% of the population. Several groups of researchers offer a theory to explain what is happening: “Three years after treatment for Helicobacter pylori, hundreds of our patients suffered from reflux esophagitis (return of stomach contents into the esophagus) twice as often as those infected with Helicobacter pylori. A study of 6,000 patients showed that the more damaged the stomach lining by Helicobacter pylori, the less pronounced the reflux.

“Helicobacter pylori is not that dangerous. More and more evidence shows that it has a protective effect on the esophagus! . This is how Cleveland Gastroenterology Clinic director Joel Richer commented on this publication. Director of the Division of Epidemiology at the US National Institutes of He alth, Joseph Frumeni, and Boston Medical Center gastroenterologist Charles Blease emphasize that

They showed that Helicobacter pylori increases the synthesis of the appetite-reducing hormone leptin, as well as the hunger-inducing hormone ghrelin. And that after treating Helicobacter pylori, patients gain weight. It also increases the level of cholesterol in the blood.

No research to this day has been able to disprove the fact that a stomach ulcer forms only when the body's defense mechanisms are violated. Provocateurs are all conditions in which the strength of stomach acids decreases: stress, aging, smoking, inadequate nutrition, alcohol intake and antacid pills. They have become an indispensable part of the daily life of many people, they are even recommended for small children.

When the "protective cordon" of the stomach is gone, various microbes easily penetrate the body, changing the bacterial background and the properties of the bacteria - permanent inhabitants of the gastrointestinal tract. They go from harmless to pathogenic.

According to published data, the intake of antacids leads to an increase in the growth of several types of bacteria. The proposed three-component treatment of an ulcer - 2 antibiotics plus an agent that reduces the secretion of gastric acid - can easily disturb the balance of the intestinal microflora and this can lead to major problems. In addition, helicobacter pylori acquires resistance to preparations. The director of the German National Center for the Study of Helicobacter pylori Dr. Kist states that most doctors do not take into account the fact that nowadays 50% of patients have a strain of Helicobacter pylori resistant to antibiotics. In the 1980s, they were only 30%. Taking the inadequate preparation does not lead to a cure, but strengthens the resistance of Helicobacter pylori.
