Basil is a popular spice that Europeans enjoy adding to salads, soups and main dishes. And in Central Asia, the leaves of the plant are even put into tea. It is so famous that it is mentioned in Boccaccio's Decameron. The famous physician Avicenna also used the plant for medicinal purposes.

What makes basil so useful?

The essential oil of the plant has disinfectant and bactericidal properties. Basil stimulates digestion and appetite. It increases the general tone of the body, while at the same time it has a calming effect on the nervous system. This royal herb is recommended for diseases of the kidneys, liver and gall bladder. A decoction of the leaves can also be used for colds and coughs.

Scientists have found that basil oil contains such useful substances as camphor, cineol, octimene, saponin, methyl havinol. In addition to these useful substances, the plant contains vitamin C, B2 and PP, provitamin A, ascorbic acid, rutin, carotene, as well as phytoncides.

Fresh basil works its magic without fail. But it does not lose its special properties in dried form. If stored properly, the aroma and composition of the spice can be preserved for a long time. Porcelain or glass containers with lids are best for this purpose. And metal and plastic are better not to use.

Fresh basil is a low-calorie product: 100 g of the plant contains only 27 kcal. But there are 251 kcal in dried basil because of the high carbohydrate content.

Scientists confirm that the enzymes contained in basil contribute to the breakdown and burning of fat in the body. And this means that the royal herb also helps to lose extra pounds.
