In recent years, people's interest in the so-called alternative medicine. What does it actually involve? What is a holistic approach in the treatment of various diseases? What is our own role in our own he alth?

See the answer to these and many more questions in the interview with Dr. Krasimir Milev - holistic therapist, specialist in alternative and conventional medicine. In 1996 he graduated in medicine, and in 1998 he started working as a naturopath. He completed a course in aromatherapy; participated in the 9th International Symposium on Obesity with several research papers; received his PhD from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicine in Calcutta; is approved as a member of the International Board of Holistic Medicine Practitioners.

Dr. Milev, my first question is what does the speci alty Holistic Therapist cover?

- This term has not been widely adopted in our country, as it is foreign - in Greek, holos actually means whole, whole. And the holistic approach is just that. Holistic medicine, holistic doctors, unlike classical, traditional ones, pay attention to everything. Not only the individual complaints and symptoms, organs and systems, but the person in his entirety - his psycho-emotional state, his position in the social environment. Because balance is very important. It is important because most often the disturbances in this balance are the basis of the he alth problems that befall us. I want to point out that the holistic approach sometimes includes drug treatment, but it can also be combined with some natural treatment, with psychotherapy, with an appropriate movement regime, with a change in eating habits, etc. All this matters for he alth.

For me, the path to he alth should look like this: it should be pleasant, not painful and painful, but on the contrary, a person should feel comfortable and happy. That's exactly what a holistic approach is.

You have a PhD from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicine - how has that enriched your knowledge?

- Yes, the knowledge I gained at the Indian Board of Alternative Medicine greatly enriched my outlook on therapeutic behavior in general. Because this holistic approach there is rather a rule that they use even in conventional treatment. Whereas in our country it is more of an exception, since in practice personal doctors do not have the time and strength to explain to their patients what a hygienic diet regimen is, to give detailed recommendations for movement and preparation of nutritional programs. It goes directly to drug treatment, as often the patient

is discharged with some chronic illness, for example diabetes, without being told how to eat and what to avoid in order not to develop complications. This is a serious oversight

And in the East, people, relying perhaps on their thousand-year-old traditions, have preserved the correct view of these important elements for maintaining human he alth. Basically, they have an inner sense there, a subconscious attraction to a balanced state. Whereas we Westerners often vacillate from extreme to extreme. It hinders us to a great extent and affects all aspects of our lives.

What holistic methods do you apply in your practice?

- First of all, what I have as an experience is in weight loss diet treatments. In particular, with the so-called fruit-tea unloading mode, which is a kind of softened fasting. This kind of unloading leads to the unlocking of the body's natural cleansing and healing capabilities, based on the fact that nature has placed it in every living being. For example, wild and domestic animals stop eating when they get sick. It's an instinct it obeys.

The same instinct exists in humans - when we are sick, the appetite is suppressed. But we don't always follow that gut feeling and very often do the exact opposite. In ancient times, however, people drew wisdom directly from nature and did what they saw and felt, chasing a beneficial effect. Gradually over time this has evolved into a healing system. Today there are numerous schools of therapeutic fasting, each with its own signature and characteristics. But I hasten to say right away that when we talk about starvation, I mean a he althy low-energy diet that has a detoxifying and healing effect.

It's good that you explain it, because it's clearly not about absolute starvation, but a healing system

- The concept of "hunger" is another inaccuracy that has forced itself into our language. In English, "starving" and "fasting" are different concepts, and the first carries a negative sign. In the sense of

excruciating malnutrition, deprivation

And fasting is fasting for the purpose of cleansing, unloading the body, spiritual enlightenment, etc. So what we do in order to improve he alth indicators is rather close to fasting that has been established in traditions and beliefs for millennia.

Apart from this softened fasting as you called it, what else do you use in human therapy?

- We apply aromatherapy and herbal treatment. In this area, we Bulgarians have a huge heritage of knowledge bequeathed to us in the books of Petar Dimkov. Folk medicine still occupies an important place in every alternative treatment approach today.

Let's talk about your patients, what complaints do they most often come to you with?

- Most often people come to us with diseases common to the modern world - overweight, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, disorders in the fat balance of the blood, gallstones, kidney stones, hormonal disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, anxiety and depressive states, allergic and autoimmune diseases.

And here I want to point out something that more and more often impresses me. We Bulgarians think that our compatriots who live abroad feel better. And the truth is that they often look worse than us. This is a very strange phenomenon. Yes, we think that those who have gone abroad are fulfilled and live more peacefully, but this is not always the case.

When such a person comes and sits with me, I see the difference between a Bulgarian who lives here and one who is abroad. The very one who went for a better life somewhere there seems more restless, more insecure, more impatient, more nervous, even though his life seems to be settled. Nevertheless, we continue to advise our children to realize themselves outside, without realizing what the native land gives us. And will they really be better off there? Here we focus on the main thing - it only depends on us how good and fulfilling life in Bulgaria will be.

And what are the results of your patients after the therapy?

- It is natural that when

their metrics are improving, they see it, feel it and are very happy

And they are especially happy that this happens without drugs, i.e.f. understand that this is the real cure. The fact is that when drugs improve certain indicators, it is at the expense of others. I.e. drug treatment is a double-edged sword and there is always a price we pay. And the most unpleasant thing is that we pay with he alth, because we allegedly treat one thing and damage another. So a person is happy not when at the age of 30 he takes a handful of drugs to maintain his normal parameters, but when he does not drink anything and feels good. This is true he alth.

Many people also come to us when they are he althy, and I think that is the most reasonable thing. A gram of prevention is more than a kilogram of treatment! The correct approach is precisely this - a person without complaints should check and take care of his he alth.

Unfortunately, this culture is still rare in our country. Often people come to such extreme states that even we can no longer help, as everything is very difficult to turn around at such a stage. The earlier a treatment and prevention is started, the better. Even at childhood level. Some authors prove that nutrition up to 7-8 years of age has 90% importance for he alth later, compared to nutrition after that. I.e. in this phase, when the body is growing and forming, eating habits are crucial.

Naturally, we have to think not only about us, but also about the generation that comes after us. It's a good thing that most children have an inner drive and a sense of propriety. The change to a more correct diet for them is easy and spontaneous. Young people are much more open to new things and often have an inner source of knowledge.

The food that grows in our lands,

is the most useful for our body. It is right to consume it, not things brought from the other side of the world. We must use mostly what has been given to us for centuries and what the land and the region have to offer.

Hundreds of pishman healers and nutritionists have flocked, people are getting confused…

- That's right, I personally avoid making nutritional programs as there are nutritionists for that purpose. Years ago, a decision was made in our country that these people should have a medical education, but this is not the case everywhere. In some countries, nutritionists are specialists trained in this activity without being doctors, but they often work together with doctors and thus avoid the danger of mistakes.

I believe that the future will be characterized by the pursuit of a more balanced, more correct and he althy life. We will value quality over quantity. This would give us a better balance within ourselves and between us and others. This balance is a universal law embedded in the foundations of the universe. When we keep it in ourselves - only then are we he althy!

Unfortunately, there are predictions that if we don't change our lifestyle, somewhere in 20-30 years, by 2050, depression will have affected 100% of people in the developed world. And it is a manifestation of a deep psycho-emotional imbalance, when apparently everything is fine, but…

Nowadays we don't feel like going to work, we don't feel like communicating with others, we don't feel like smiling, or doing anything to make the life of the person next to us better. I.e. most people have totally lost he alth characteristics on absolutely all levels. If we can fix all that, things might change. And the change starts inside us, although everyone is looking for justification outside… And in fact, this is an escape from the essence of the problem.
