Basketball player Margarita Papazova was born on April 13, 1977 in Sofia. During her career, she played for the teams of "Kremikovtsi", "Slavia", "Levski" and "Tony 7" (Sliven). Basketball is at the center of her life. She even got married on the court in the "Universiade" hall at the suggestion of her husband, Titi Papazov. We find the whole family - Margarita, Titi and their two sons Alexander and Mitko, playing sports during the "Live Actively" campaign in Sofia. Margarita Papazova shared with the readers of "Doctor" her understanding of a he althy life and how she deals with sports injuries

Margarita, why should we move, do sports and at what age is this useful?

- In my opinion there is no age limit. For example, I saw on social networks a photo of a 90-year-old woman in the gym with tiles on her stomach. Now, with the children, we joined the procession from the "Sofia" theater to the NDK. The boys are with their hoverboards. We were last in the group. A little girl with a helmet, probably 6 years old, was skating behind us. So sport is not a matter of opportunity, but of desire. My sons Sasho and Mitko have been in the gym with the basketball since they were very young. Not everywhere in the city has the necessary conditions to play sports. But my mother's neighborhood is undeveloped, with gardens, with greenery, and there my children ride bicycles, skate, play football, run. Everything we once did, they do too.

How do you take care of your he alth?

- Until five years ago, I could eat whatever I wanted and do whatever I wanted. But then age took its toll. I am no longer 20, but 39 years old. I have to lead a different way of life. The food we consume is not of such high quality. That's why I try to detox my body twice a year. I found it also helped my thyroid problem - Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I just finished a two week detox today. The result before her on one hormone was 16 units and now it has dropped to 9. That is a pretty drastic difference in just two weeks. I also reduced the dose of the medicine I take. My goal is to eventually reduce the dose to a minimum and even stop it.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an extremely common disease nowadays. My doctor also has such a problem and she said that when she discovered it in time, she had to wait two weeks for enough people to gather to start research. And now every fifth woman has this disease.

Tell us more about the detox you are doing?

- Dr. Nikolova recommended me to do the "Kolo vada" detoxification program. Everything is natural, there are no chemicals in the products. They are taken in the morning and evening for seven days. Fruits, vegetables, plenty of water and herbal tea can be consumed during the day. In the next four days, drink powders that dissolve in natural juice. But nothing is eaten.

The powders clean out the slags and any parasites in the intestines

As is known, most he alth problems start from the digestive tract. Three days of fruit and vegetable feeding follows.

This detox has the effect of solving many he alth problems. But even if we don't have a disease, dirty air and poor quality food can make us sick. That's why it's good to clean the body twice a year and give it a break.

What is your impression of the Bulgarian he alth system?

- We have encountered both sides of the he alth care system - both the good and the bad. For example, my mother had a heart problem. He had to do some research. In one hospital, they told her that she was almost terribly late and that she had to have an operation tomorrow, which would cost her a lot of money. I was very scared and startled by the news that an operation was urgently needed. But we went to one of the best specialists in cardiology - Prof. Ivo Petrov. He looked at the tests, prescribed medication and told us to come back in six months. There was no question of surgery at all. We were convinced that Prof. Ivo Petrov was a luminary in his field. So many people from all over Bulgaria were waiting for an examination with him. But he was able to pay attention to my mother, he took the time to explain things to us, to put us at ease, as any doctor should do. And not to say that we need an operation to get some money - this is not the medicine we should be receiving.

We have many well-known doctors that we rely on. One of them is Dr. Mikhail Zaharinov, who is now the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Pirogov. Titi's mother and my father, who suffered strokes many years ago, were treated by him and received incredibly adequate care. So we have faced both sides of the he alth care system - both the good and the bad.

Do you justify aggression towards medics?

- Just as there are doctors who ask for money to pay attention to you, there are also patients who rush to beat doctors. It's up to a person - whether you're good or not. This is what I teach my children, that people are divided into good and bad.

How do you achieve your ideal weight?

- I have been at this weight all my life. I have been doing sports since I was 7 years old. The truth is that I have neglected myself a bit in recent years. (laughs) But since I didn't feel well without training, two months ago I started actively playing sports, of course, not basketball. I go to power plate and tirex in a small gym, where a trainer deals with me individually.

Powerplate is a vibrating device,

on which you climb and perform exercises for certain seconds. Tirex are ropes attached to the wall, and through them you do exercises based on your own weight. I personally find this very interesting. I tried other activities because I have lower back problems. But these two things appealed to me the most. I resumed sports because the inactivity started to weigh on me. When you've been on the move all your life, you've been training and at some point you stop, at first you feel good, rested. But at some point you cross the line and inaction weighs you down.

What are your lower back problems?

- I have herniated disc surgery. This is one of the unpleasant memories I have from my basketball career. I was operated on in the "Pirogov" neurosurgery, again by Dr. Mikhail Zaharinov. We are all his patients in our family. God forbid that he should not have to help us precisely in his speci alty. After the herniated disc surgery, I had a long recovery. I found an incredible professional - Dr. Boyko Petrov, who is the physiotherapist of the "Levski" football team. I also tried acupuncture. I recovered and feel great now. The exercises I do for chest and abdominal muscles also help me a lot.

Did you have implants placed during the surgery?

- No, it was "bloodless". My herniated disc turned out to be huge - 3.5 cm. When Titi called me on the phone to make an appointment for a consultation and said that the herniated disc was 3.5 cm, they didn't believe me. They told him he didn't realize it was probably 3.5 millimeters. They were convinced when we went with the MRI results. It was very rare to see such an outburst - everything had come out of the disk. The nerve was pinched and

my leg was numb for a long time

Plus it was extremely painful. But they operated on me and everything went very quickly. After surgery, the most important thing for the back is rehabilitation.

They say that professional athletes have a hard time giving birth. How was it with you?

- Oh, I gave birth very easily. I had contractions all day and in the evening they became much more frequent and stronger. I told Titi: "I'm probably going to give birth - let's go to the hospital."He answered me: "It's very late, it's 12 o'clock. Why don't you take "No-shpa" and let's go in the morning." (laughs) I knew we weren't going to make things right with No-shpa. So we went to Saint Lazarus Hospital. My Dr. Blagoeva worked there, and she monitored my pregnancy. I wanted to give birth normally if possible. They gave me an epidural and I actually gave birth normally. Then I recovered very quickly after giving birth. I am lucky to come across extremely good specialists.
