Teams of the Military Medical Academy participated in a medical air evacuation exercise in Germany together with military formations from the USA, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Great Britain and Albania. The medics from the flight staff from the Scientific and Applied Center for Military Medical Expertise, Aviation and Marine Medicine at the Military Academy of Medical Sciences showed their capabilities in the exercise "SABER JUNCTION 17" at the training center of the US Forces - Hohenfels in Germany

Sub. Dr. Diana Staneva-Gocheva, who is a flight doctor, and Senior Sergeant Tsvetelina Ivanova - a flight nurse, performed aeromedical evacuation tasks together with their American colleagues, who are from the aviation part of the 10th mountain battalion of the ground forces of USA. Within 25 days, under field conditions, the teams carried out air evacuation of the sick, injured and wounded.

From the receipt of the medical evacuation request, the crews had a 15-minute readiness for takeoff. The aim is to observe the rule of the "golden hour", during which first medical aid can be given to the wounded. Depending on the number of victims, it is determined how many helicopters to take off.

The exercise covered planning and coordination, general medical procedures, in-flight medical activities, selection of patients according to the degree of urgency and their preparation for aeromedical evacuation, actions of the medical teams on board the helicopter and communication with the aircraft crews. Reception, transport and transfer of patients between the various medical units, as well as elements of protection before and during aeromedical evacuation, medical supply, aviation accident procedures and emergency exit of the aircraft were trained.

Aeromedical evacuation is an essential element of the provision of military personnel in peacetime, during military operations and when performing overseas missions. The Bulgarian teams improved and enriched their professional experience and knowledge and received a high evaluation from the command of the exercise. This is another proof of the good work and the authority enjoyed by the medical teams of the VMA among foreign partners.
