At least 60% of the cheese on the Bulgarian market is an imitation product and contains vegetable fats, milk processors warned at a press conference. The branch officials gave the briefing after a "black list" of producers who put vegetable fats in their products was published in some media, BTA and BNR reported.

Simeon Prisadashki, Ivan Gruncharov and Kamelia Velkova, heads of large milk processing enterprises, stated that their inclusion in the widespread "black list" is incorrect, false and damages their prestige.

They declared that they make their products only from raw milk, which is their own production or bought from Bulgarian producers, and they never added vegetable fats such as palm oil, etc.

The affected companies have appealed to the prosecutor's office for their unfair "defamation". In this whole circus, according to them, the commercial chains, which pressured the producers for lower prices, are also involved.

The milk processors denied having a cartel between them for the purchase of the raw material with the argument that there are 240 of them in total and this is impossible. Moreover, the purchase price for a liter of raw cow's milk has a margin of 40 to 60 cents per liter, which also confirms their claim.

According to Ivan Gruncharov, who is also the mayor of Lukovit, 40 percent of real cheese and yellow cheese are currently on the market, and the remaining 60 percent are imitation products produced by 10 companies.

"Go and take a walk at the "Women's Market", there they sell cheese in trays, which they do not know what it is at all. The consumer, entering the store, knows that there is no way to buy cheese for 4 BGN. Some time ago, an enterprise in Greece was fined 5 million euros for investing in products of plant origin," said Dimitar Zorov, chairman of the Association of Milk Processors in Bulgaria, quoted by news.bg.

Milk processors propose that in Bulgaria the use of vegetable fats in dairy products be totally banned, and that the control be done not in the enterprises, where the owner is warned and shows only that part of his business that he wants, but in the shops.

This will make it clear who sells cheese for BGN 4 and claims that it is made only from milk, say milk processors.

According to them, only such a measure will bring order to the chaos that now exists in the market. Indeed the so-called imitation products are cheaper than the real ones, but according to the calculations of the Association of Milk Processors, a family will spend 50 cents more per day if they put cheeses and curds made from real milk on the table.
