Musical rhythms help babies learn to speak faster, AFP reported, citing a study published in the United States.

Scientists compared two groups of 9-month-old children. The former tried to recreate a musical rhythm by beating a small drum, and the latter played with carts and cubes.

The results indicate that children with musical toys show greater activity in the parts of the brain responsible for distinguishing between vocal and musical functions important for language learning.

"This study is the first to be conducted with such young children, and it suggests that babies exposed to musical rhythms at an earlier age have more pronounced abilities to recognize language and music," explains Christina Zao, researcher at the Institute for Education and the Study of the Brain (ILABS) at the University of Washington and project leader."This means that earlier musical stimulation can affect children's cognitive abilities."

Language, like music, has very pronounced rhythmic characteristics, scientists emphasize. The rhythm of syllables, for example, helps distinguish sounds and understand what a person is saying. It is this ability to identify differences in sounds that helps babies learn to speak.

To test the effects of music training, the 20 babies were given 12 sessions of 15 minutes each over a month. A week after the end of the experiment, all the children underwent a scan to determine the exact areas in their brain that were activated when listening to a series of musical sounds and words.

Babies who had been in the music group up to that point showed clear brain functions attesting to their better ability to account for musical changes.

The researchers focused their observations on two brain lobes: the auditory cortex and the prefrontal cortex. They are precisely the key to increasing attention and concentration.
